Code of Ethics
I
Members shall not accept any assignment for which they are not qualified.
Acceptance of an assignment shall imply a moral undertaking by the member to work with all due professionalism.

Members shall not accept – and much less offer – working conditions that are not in accordance with the standards set by APIC.

III
Members shall not accept any job or situation which may bring the profession into disrepute.

IV
Members shall be bound by the strictest secrecy with regard to all information disclosed during the practice of the profession and shall refrain from deriving any personal gain from such information.

V
It is the duty of the members to afford their colleagues moral assistance and collegiality.
Members shall refrain from any action or statement prejudicial to the interests of APIC or its members.
Any complaint arising from the conduct of any other member or any disagreement regarding any decision taken by the Association shall be settled within APIC itself.

Ethical Recommendations


1. Multiple assignments for the same day

Members shall not accept multiple assignments for the same day, if the accumulated duration exceeds 8 hours work.

2. Overlapping assignments

a) Members shall not accept more than one assignment for the same period of time.

b) Members shall only provide a partial interpretation of a meeting when it is otherwise impossible to find a colleague available to work for the entire duration of the assignment.

3. Cancellation by the interpreter

a) Only in force majeure circumstances shall the interpreter cancel an assignment accepted previously.

b) Force majeure implies illness, serious personal problems and other similar unforeseen situations.

c) Therefore, the interpreter shall not cancel an assignment he/she has already accepted simply because a more interesting alternative has presented itself (be it financial, material, geographic or any other).

d) In the event it becomes totally impossible to comply with the commitments accepted, then the interpreter must ensure adequate replacement by a colleague.

4. Partially overlapping assignments

Recommendations 2 and 3 clearly imply that the interpreter shall never leave an assignment, half-way through, to go and start another one which may last for more days and, this way, be able to perform two (or more!) assignments which partially overlap.

5. Mobile phones

In the booth, interpreters must have their mobile phones disconnected at all times even whilst not interpreting.
